The CMQ was designed to rate work activities that are specific-enough to be verifiable.

Helping Employers Measure the
Two "Worlds of Work"

Some of the biggest challenges facing employers involve the tasks of accurately measuring, and then defensibly linking, the two very different "worlds of work" described below.

Professionals working in the rehabilitation and disability adjudication areas likewise have a pressing need to be able to accurately describe the demands jobs place on workers, and to match an individual's residual functional capacity to the demands of a specific job or occupation.

Since 1989, Personnel Systems & Technologies Corporation (PSTC) has been developing and publishing web-based assessment tools that can help you deal with both the person- and job-sides of the two "worlds of work" described below.

In the table below, the left column refers to the job-side domain of work activities that are described in the job analysis process.

The right column refers to the person-side domain of abilities, values, aptitudes, temperaments, and other relatively stable traits on which people differ that may influence a person's capacity to perform a job.

Characteristics of People that
Predict Job Performance
  • Before you can determine what kinds of workers you should be hiring, you must first determine what activities your jobs require employees to perform.

  • The Common-Metric Questionnaire (CMQ) defines the gold-standard in terms of collecting high quality, defensible data describing job demands.

  • See the Work section for a description of how CMQ can help you analyze your jobs.
  • After you know what activities your jobs require, you can focus on identifying the ability and/or personality characteristics that successful employees possess.

  • PSTC publishes a range of high-quality, web-based assessments of both cognitive abilities and personality traits.

  • CMQ results can help you determine which person-side traits you should be assessing in applicants.

  • See the People section for more information on our assessment tests.
